Head of Syndicate Finance


Job description

This is a newly created senior management position within a Group with strong growth aspirations. Polo Works has an insurance service company (Polo Commercial Insurance Services Ltd) and a Lloyd’s managing agency (Polo Managing Agency Ltd), with approximately 350 people working across Cheltenham and London.

Working for the CFO, this role manages the finances, client relationships, regulatory reporting and budgets of Polo Managing Agency’s growing number of syndicates under management.

Key Responsibilities

Work closely with the CFO to ensure that the PMA finance function is managed, coached, developed and sufficiently resourced.

Be the primary point of contact for PMA clients and the executive team for syndicate financial related matters across all disciplines.

Work closely with the Chief Actuary and Head of Client Finance to ensure that the production and reporting of managed syndicates works efficiently and with effective governance maintained at all times.

Ensure compliance with relevant regulations, including the Lloyd’s Principles of Doing Business and that an appropriate control framework and governance is maintained through policies, procedures and training.

Oversee production of Board and Management MI related to PMA syndicates alongside external reporting requirements, for example: Syndicate Report and Accounts, and Lloyd’s Regulatory Returns. Ensuring the quality is maintained throughout.

Own the relationship with the syndicate auditors, resolving issues where they arise and ensuring deliverables are managed and timetables adhered to.

Drive the implementation and development of finance systems to create efficiencies and improve the quality of reporting.

Maintain internal accounting policies and work closely with the Risk function ensuring suitable control frameworks and governance is maintained.

Manage risk through analysis of liabilities and investments, taking, or recommending appropriate actions if required.

Oversee cash flow and liquidity management across managed syndicates.

Primary point of contact with regard to Group reporting queries relating to the Marco syndicate.

Attend audit committees and exec meetings where required, providing financial insight on managed syndicates.

Senior management level remit of decision making

Experience and Skills

Proven experience in senior finance roles within the Lloyd’s market

Preferred experience in a senior finance role in a multi-national group

First class communication and stakeholder management skills

Excellent working knowledge of Lloyd’s and the London insurance industry

Strong leadership and people management skills

An analytical mind, comfortable with numbers on a GAAP, YoA and Solvency II basis

Knowledge and Qualifications

Qualified accountant with at least 10 years experience in Lloyd’s

In depth knowledge of finance, regulatory reporting and risk management practices

Excellent knowledge of data analysis and planning / forecasting
